If you’ve ever talked about God’s goodness and healing, you’ve probably heard this question:
"Well, what about Paul’s thorn?"
It’s often brought up as proof that God sometimes wants us to suffer—especially with sickness.
But is that really what Scripture says?
What Was Paul’s Thorn?
In 2 Corinthians 12:7, Paul says:
"…there was given me a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me."
Many assume this “thorn” was a sickness or disease. But if we look at Scripture, that interpretation doesn’t hold up.
Thorn in the Flesh = Persecution, Not Sickness
The phrase “thorn in the flesh” wasn’t unique to Paul—it was a Hebrew idiom, much like how we might say “a pain in the neck” today.
In the Old Testament, similar phrases were used to describe people who opposed God’s people:
Paul's thorn in the flesh was persecution and opposition—a messenger sent my Satan.
This is part of the reality for believers living in a hostile world. Paul says, "those who desire to live godly will suffer persecution" (2 Tim 3:12). And that's what Paul's thorn was: persecution.
If we needed any further confirmation on this, Paul himself explains what he suffered in the previous chapter: beatings, imprisonments, shipwrecks, hunger, dangers, and relentless persecution (2 Corinthians 11:23-28).
There’s no mention of sickness in that list.
So, when Paul talks about a “thorn in the flesh,” he’s describing persecution and hardship, not disease.
Why Does This Matter?
Many Christians use Paul’s thorn as a reason to accept sickness as part of God’s will.
But Jesus never teaches that sickness is from God—we created that theology, probably as a way to try and explain our pain.
If Jesus never attributed sickness to God—and He is the exact image of God—then why are we?
Jesus healed all who came to Him (Matthew 8:16-17), and He revealed God’s heart and nature in action.
Paul’s thorn wasn’t sickness. It was the relentless opposition he faced as he spread the gospel. And even in that, God’s grace was enough for him.
Final Word
If you’ve ever felt stuck in suffering and wondered if God is the one behind it—He’s not. He is always good. He is always for you. And His grace is not about leaving you in suffering but empowering you to overcome.
So next time someone asks, “What about Paul’s thorn?”—you’ll know the truth.
Questions for reflection
1. Have I ever assumed that my suffering was from God rather than recognizing His grace to overcome it?
2. How does understanding Paul’s thorn as persecution (not sickness) shift my perspective on God's will for my health and well-being?
3. Am I fully embracing God’s goodness, or have I unknowingly accepted suffering as something He wants for me?
