Have you ever felt like your faith is more complicated than it needs to be?
Maybe you’re trying to pray more, read more, serve more—yet no matter how much you do, something still feels off.
You long for peace, joy, and connection with God, but instead, you feel like you’re constantly striving, exhausted, and unsure if you're even doing it right.
If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone. I’ve been there too. And what I discovered changed everything: simplicity is the key to a deeper walk with God.
The Problem with Overcomplicating Faith
Somewhere along the way, many of us were taught that the more we do for God, the closer we’ll feel to Him. We load our lives with spiritual “to-do lists”:
Quiet time every day.
Bible reading plans.
Volunteer commitments.
Always saying “yes” to serving.
But instead of intimacy, we feel burdened. Instead of peace, we feel pressure.
A big part of this is the performance-based Christianity that’s rampant in many church communities today. The idea that we must earn God’s love and approval through our works—whether it's ministry, prayer, or “doing” for Him—is deeply ingrained. This mindset turns faith into a task list to complete, a measure of our worth based on our performance. The problem is, this is the opposite of the gospel.
Here’s the truth: God isn’t asking you to do more—He’s inviting you to be with Him.
The Bible reminds us of this simplicity in Matthew 11:28-30, where Jesus says:
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
When we overcomplicate faith and buy into performance-based Christianity, we lose sight of the simple, beautiful truth of the gospel: that Jesus invites us to come as we are, to rest, and to be with Him.
The gospel was never meant to be a burden—it’s an invitation to rest.
Why Simplicity Leads to Intimacy with God
Simplicity allows us to focus on what truly matters—our connection with God.
Jesus modeled this for us. He often withdrew from the crowds and busyness to spend time alone with the Father (Luke 5:16). His focus wasn’t on doing more but on being with God.
Jesus didn’t call us to busyness—He called us to relationship.
Psalm 46:10 reminds us of the power of stillness:
“Be still, and know that I am God.”
When we simplify our faith, we create space to hear God’s voice, experience His presence, and align our hearts with His. It’s in this simplicity that intimacy grows.
As Corrie ten Boom once said, “Don’t wrestle, just nestle.” Or what we say in the Snuggle Strategy, "Snuggle, don't struggle."
In the stillness of simplicity, God’s voice becomes the loudest.
3 Ways to Simplify Your Faith
Here are three ways you can start simplifying your walk with God today:
1. Focus on Presence, Not Performance
Let go of the mindset that you have to “do” more to please God. Instead, practice simply being with Him. This could be as simple as sitting quietly and saying, “God, I’m here.”
Faith grows deepest when we stop trying to make it complicated.
2. Start Small and Stay Consistent
You don’t need to spend hours in prayer or read ten chapters of the Bible every day. Start with one verse or five minutes of quiet time. Consistency builds connection.
Sometimes, the most spiritual thing you can do is simply sit with God.
3. Ask God for Guidance
Pray and ask, “Lord, what’s one thing I can let go of that’s distracting me from You?” He will show you where to simplify and refocus.
Proverbs 3:6 reminds us:
“In all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”
The Joy of a Simplified Faith
When we simplify our faith, something amazing happens.
We stop striving and start resting.
We stop overthinking and start trusting.
We stop doing for God and start being with God.
What if your faith journey is about less doing and more being?
And in that simplicity, we find the deeper connection we’ve been longing for.
As A.W. Tozer said, “God is looking for those with whom He can do the impossible—what a pity that we plan only the things we can do by ourselves.”
Questions for reflection
1. What are the areas in my faith where I feel the pressure to perform, and how can I begin to rest in God’s grace instead?
2. What would it look like for me to focus on being with God rather than doing for God this week?
3. What one small step can I take today to simplify my faith and grow deeper in intimacy with God?
Bless you
