You can't earn God's love – here's why

I was recently asked this question from somebody on YouTube

One of the greatest deceptions of religion and performance Christianity is the belief that you must earn God's love.

This is the root of why so many struggle with questions of worth and whether they are "good enough" for Him.

Let’s clear this up:

God’s love isn’t based on your worthiness – it’s a free gift.

You don’t need to – nor can you ever – earn it.

“But don’t I need to be worthy or do something to receive His love?”

No.

God’s love has never been about what you do but about who He is.

Love that is earned is no longer a gift but a wage you have to work for. And God’s love isn’t something you can purchase or perform for.

Think about it:

Love that must be bought is nothing more than a transaction, like prostitution.

Love that is forced is what we call abuse, even rape.

But God’s love is different – it’s pure, free, and freely given.

To receive it, the key isn’t striving harder. It’s letting go of the idea that you must prove yourself and instead, opening your heart to receive the gift He’s already given.

He already loves you fully, right now, as you are.

“But doesn’t God only love those who live righteously?”

No.

God loves you at your worst just as much as He loves you at your best. His love isn’t conditional upon your behavior.

Yes, God calls us to live righteously out of a response to His love, but His love is not the reward for your righteousness – it’s the reason you can be righteous at all.

3 Practicals to Embrace His Love

1. Start Small

Spend quiet moments in prayer or reflection, asking God to soften your heart and help you experience His love. Even a few minutes daily can open your heart to receive what’s already there.

2. Reflect on His Promises

Read scriptures that affirm God’s love for you (Romans 8:38-39, 1 John 4:9-10). Let these verses remind you daily that His love isn’t based on your performance.

3. Surround Yourself with Reminders

Keep a note, scripture, or visual reminder somewhere you can see it. Let it anchor you in the truth that you are fully loved and accepted by God right now.

Questions for reflection:

1. In what ways have I felt the need to earn God's love, and how has this belief impacted my relationship with Him?

2. How can I actively let go of the mindset that my worthiness is tied to my actions, and what steps can I take to embrace the unconditional nature of God's love?

3. What specific promises or scriptures resonate with me the most regarding God’s love, and how can I incorporate these reminders into my daily life to reinforce my identity as His beloved?

Bless you,
