Unsure of your next step? Here’s my story and what helped

Ever felt stuck trying to decide between a few options and wished you just knew which one to take?

I’ve been there, and this might help.

This is a journal entry from last April 2023. It’s a bit hard to read, so I’ll type it out for you.

Tash and I had been living with her parents for 6 years. What was meant to be a few weeks ended up stretching into a much longer season, and during that time, our house had been rented out.

But through it all, we realized our desire to be full-time parents also meant having a place of our own again.

The process of moving out brought up a lot of “junk in the trunk” (more on that another time), but it also taught us a ton about making big decisions together, trusting God to guide us, and walking through multiple options without forcing anything.

The Options We Faced

We had 3 options, but honestly, we weren’t sure which one to go with.

So, we wrote them down in order of our preference and just decided to trust God.

We knew He’d guide us, close doors that weren’t meant for now, and make the right path clear.

As it says in Proverbs 3:5-6:

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”

Here were the options:

1. Buy a second home with space for our PT business.

2. Sell and buy a new home, still with space for our PT business.

3. Move back to our current home, which had no space for the PT business (meaning we’d have to close it).

We started with option 1, looked at homes, and applied for a mortgage loan.

The answer?

Declined.

So, we tried option 2, but our broker advised us against it because of the market, interest rates, and our financial situation.

That door closed too.

This left us with option 3: moving back into our home, but having to close our PT business.

I’ll be honest – I was freaking out, thinking, “How am I going to provide for my family now?”

It really showed me how much I didn’t fully trust God to be my Provider – even though I could preach a good message about it – but that was a huge part of the journey. I’ll talk more about that another time, but it was a big shift for me.

Letting Go of Control

At the same time, we were hesitant to move our tenants because they loved the place and we didn’t want to mess with their situation.

We let them know what we were thinking, and they were super understanding.

A couple of weeks later, they came back and told us they’d found a house just two driveways up from us!

They were happy, and it was a huge confirmation for us.

That made it clear – we were moving back to our house after 6 years.

Even when we didn’t see the full picture, we trusted He was guiding us to where we needed to be.

God’s Perfect Provision

This all happened in October/November 2023, and looking back now, it’s been perfect.

The layout of the house, the space for the kids – everything just fits.

Yes, we closed the PT business in December 2023, but God really showed up during that transition.

It became clear that letting go of that business was just the start of a new chapter. He led us into something even better, and it’s been a beautiful process of trusting Him more.

Like it says in Matthew 6:25-26:

“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?”

We realized that our Father was taking care of us, just like He always does.

Encouragement

If you’re facing multiple options and don’t know which way to go, try writing them down in order of preference.

Then take a step with each one, and trust that God will close the doors that aren’t for now and that “He will make your paths straight” (Proverbs 3:6)

Questions for reflection

1. When I have multiple options in front of me, how do I decide which way to go? Do I find myself trying to figure it all out on my own, or do I lean on God to show me the way?

2. Is there an area in my life where I’m holding onto control and finding it hard to trust God with? What would it look like if I let Him take the lead?

3. Have I ever had a door close, only to realize later that it was God guiding me toward something better? What did I learn from that experience?

Bless you
