Striving In Transition? Maybe You Just Need to Be

"Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes... including you." — Anne Lamott

Have you ever felt like you were in a transition, but instead of clarity, all you had were more questions?

Maybe you’ve spent years doing something you were good at—maybe even something people expected of you—but now it feels like a drain. Social media, a business, a calling, relationships… things that once felt alive now feel heavy. And yet, the moment you think about stepping back, there’s this voice in your head whispering:

"But shouldn’t you be doing something?"

I’ve been there. And if you’re in this space right now, I want to encourage you: You don’t have to force the next step.

The Tension Between Rest and Obligation

Many of us, especially in Christian circles, have been conditioned to believe that if God gave us a gift, we must use it in a certain way. That if we’re good at something, our entire life should be built around it.

But what if that’s not actually true?

What if the gift is real, but the way you’ve been using it has simply run its course?

For me, I started noticing that the things I once did with passion—coaching, social media, certain relationships—were now things I dreaded. And yet, because I had spent so much time investing in them, I felt like I should keep going. But deep down, I wanted something different.

I wanted space. I wanted to enjoy my family. I wanted to step away from the noise. I wanted to deepen my intimacy with God.

But still, there was that nagging thought: If I stop, what about provision? What about clarity? What if I never figure out what’s next?

Then I read Matthew 6:26 again:

"Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?"

It hit me: The birds don’t stress about provision. Why should I?

What If Rest Is the Most Faithful Thing You Can Do?

Here’s the truth I had to face: I don’t have to figure it all out. God already has it sorted.

So often, we feel like provision is tied to our effort—like we must constantly be striving or doing something productive for God to take care of us. But when I looked back, I realized something: Even after I stepped away from coaching, God still provided for me.

That changed everything.

"Sometimes the most productive thing you can do is rest." — Mark Batterson

What if stepping back isn’t laziness or failure but actually an act of trust? What if God wants to show you His goodness in ways you haven’t yet seen—not through your hustle, but through your rest?

Psalm 46:10 says, “Be still and know that I am God.”

Maybe that’s not just a nice verse—it’s an invitation.

What Would It Look Like to Just Be?

For me, it meant fully embracing a season of being rather than doing.

  • Waking up each day without the pressure of “figuring out” my next move.

  • Enjoying my family freely, without obligation.

  • Stepping away from the demands of people and social media.

  • Making space for God’s provision to unfold in ways I couldn’t predict.

That last part is key. We often want clarity before we take a step. But sometimes, clarity only comes when we stop forcing things and give ourselves space to actually hear from God.

You don’t always need clarity to obey. Sometimes you just need trust.

If You’re in This Place, Ask Yourself:

  • Have I been holding onto something just because I feel obligated to?

  • Am I resisting rest because I believe my worth is tied to productivity?

  • What would change if I fully trusted God to provide, even when I’m not striving?

  • What would it look like to embrace this season without guilt?

If those questions stir something in you, maybe it’s time to stop battling with yourself. Maybe this is your invitation to step back—not forever, but for now. To let go of the pressure to perform. To actually experience the goodness of God rather than just believing in it intellectually.

Sabbath is not about resting perfectly. It’s about resting in the One who is perfect.

And if you’re still unsure, try saying this out loud:

"This is my season to just be. To enjoy my family. To let go of pressure. To deepen my intimacy with God. I don’t have to figure anything out—God already has it sorted."

How does that feel? If it brings relief, peace, or even the smallest sense of yes, then maybe—just maybe—you’re already exactly where you need to be.

Bless you,

Lee
