How to Trust God When Nothing Makes Sense (Without Feeling Lazy)

Have you ever let go of, or felt led to step away from something, but then found yourself in the unsettling space of not knowing what’s next?

  • Maybe it was a business that no longer aligned.

  • Maybe it was a job that felt draining.

  • Maybe it was a living situation that no longer felt right.

You know there’s something ahead, something God is leading you into, but you just can’t quite put your finger on it.

In the meantime, the thoughts creep in…

  • Am I being irresponsible?

  • Should I be doing more?

  • What if provision doesn’t come?

I’ve been wrestling with these exact questions. I’ve also been in this familiar place before, but this time, it's in a much deeper and more expansive way. Thankfully, God recently showed me something that helped shift my perspective.

Unexpected Season

I closed my online group coaching business last December. I had outgrown it, and it had become more about striving than joy.

I knew I was stepping into something new, but every time I tried to make it happen, it felt like I was forcing a closed door. And from experience, I’ve learned that forcing something never leads to anything good.

So I stopped trying to force it.

And for the past few months, we’ve been trusting and resting—which also means we currently have no stable income.

We were in a similar position in 2021 when Covid mandates stripped us of our income, but that time, it was forced on us. This time, though, it feels somewhat voluntary… even though it’s not, if that makes sense.

Because of this, I found myself wrestling with an unexpected battle: Am I being faithful by trusting, or am I just being passive and lazy?

If you’ve ever been in a season where you’re unsure of what’s next, where provision feels uncertain, and where you’re battling the urge to "do something" just to feel in control—you’re not alone.

But what I’ve come to realize is this: God’s provision is not a reward for effort. It’s a reality of His goodness.

The Battle Between Trust and Striving

In our culture, productivity is almost an idol. We’ve been conditioned to believe that if we’re not "doing," we’re failing. That success is something we earn.

But God operates differently. He is a Father, not an employer. He doesn’t say, "Work harder and I’ll bless you." He says, "You are my child—everything I have is already yours." (Luke 15:31, 2 Pet 1:3)

So why is it so hard to trust that?

For me, it was the fear of being irresponsible. It felt like if I wasn’t actively "building something," I was failing as a provider. But the truth is, there is a difference between wisdom and striving.

  • Striving is trying to force something that isn’t flowing.

  • Wisdom is aligning with what God is already doing.

When I stepped away from my coaching business, it wasn’t failure—it was a repositioning. God was leading me out of effort and into alignment. But I had to recognize that before I could fully relax into it.

Provision Comes From Positioning, Not Pressure

Last night, I had a dream that helped solidify this truth for me.

Tip: Before going to bed last night, I deliberately asked God to speak to me in my dreams regarding this very situation, and He did. You can do the same.

In the dream, I was playing rugby, attempting a place kick, but the ball was too far back to make it over the posts. Instead of trying harder, I repositioned it to the 22-meter line—a strategic move.

That’s when it hit me: God wasn’t calling me to strive harder; He was repositioning me for success.

The Significance of 22

In biblical terms, the number 22 often symbolizes alignment, order, and transition into something new. It’s a number that marks the end of disorder and the establishment of something greater.

Isaiah 22:22 also says, "What He opens, no one can shut; what He shuts, no one can open", which relates to the forcing of the new door I was trying to open after closing my coaching business, but now learning to wait on His timing to happen.

In my dream, I had to move the ball to the 22-meter line to make the kick. This was a clear picture of God shifting me into a place of divine positioning—where success would come not through more effort, but through alignment.

Maybe that’s where you are too. You’ve stepped away from something that no longer felt right. You’re in the in-between, and it feels uncertain. But this isn’t a time of lack—it’s a time of realignment.

  • You’re not failing. You’re being repositioned.

  • You’re not lazy. You’re learning to trust in a new way.

  • You don’t have to force open doors. The right one will open naturally.

God’s provision doesn’t come because you hustle hard enough—it comes because He is good.

The Cost of Repositioning & The Two $200+ Payments

In the dream, I was driving a fire truck (my friend is a firefighter in real life). At one point, we needed supplies, and I pulled out my business card to pay. The cost came to two separate payments of $200+—and I had just enough to cover it.

What does this mean?

  • Two represents confirmation and witness in the Bible. When something is repeated twice, it often signifies God affirming a truth (Genesis 41:32).

  • 200 symbolizes redemption, deliverance, and God’s sufficiency. It can also represent the cost of transition.

Together, this picture was clear: This season of repositioning comes with a cost—but God is making sure I have just enough for what’s needed.

If you’re in a similar place, know this:

  • You are not lacking—you are being provided for, step by step.

  • The cost of transition is real, but God covers what is needed.

  • Provision isn’t always excess—it’s exactly what’s required.

This was a huge reassurance to me. God wasn’t leading me to lack—He was teaching me trust, while bringing me into more.

Guarding Against the Old Habits of Striving

One of the biggest challenges in this season has been undoing the “doing” mentality. Even after I recognized that God was repositioning me, my habit of "doing" (trying to take control) kept trying to sabotage what He was doing. It’s like my mind was saying:

  • “You need to do more. You’re not working hard enough.”

  • “You’re being irresponsible. Make something happen!”

  • “You have to figure this out now.”

But that’s not how the Kingdom works.

I had to consciously guard my heart against these lies and replace them with truth:

  • Provision is not a paycheck—it’s a Person.

  • God’s goodness isn’t a reward—it’s my reality.

  • I am not waiting for supply—I am living in it.

This is deep rest—the kind that releases striving and fear and lets you actually enjoy life, knowing you are taken care of.

And when you live from that place? Provision flows in a way that feels light, joyful, and easy.

I used to think provision was something I had to chase. Today I know: I'm already living in it.

God isn’t withholding from you. He’s not waiting for you to "figure it out" before He blesses you. He is already providing—sometimes in ways you don’t even recognize yet.

5 Practicals To Navigate & Reposition

1. Release the Pressure to Have It All Figured Out – It’s okay to not know the full picture. Instead of forcing clarity, focus on what God has made clear and take the next small step in faith.

2. Redefine Productivity in This Season – Sometimes, resting and trusting is the most productive thing you can do. Ask: What does obedience look like for me right now? It might not be action—it might be stillness.

3. Watch Your Inner Dialogue – The enemy loves to whisper lies like “You’re lazy” or “You’re failing” when you’re actually in a season of positioning. Challenge these thoughts and replace them with truth: God is leading me, and He is faithful to provide.

4. Recognize God’s Provision in Unexpected Ways – When income isn’t stable, it’s easy to feel like God isn’t providing. But provision isn’t always a paycheck—it can come through favor, relationships, unexpected opportunities, or even expenses that disappear. Keep your eyes open.

5. Stay Open and Expectant, Not Rushed – Don’t force the next move out of fear. Instead, stay positioned, listening, and ready for when the right opportunity comes. God’s timing is always perfect.

Final Thoughts

Sometimes, the hardest thing isn’t letting go—it’s trusting while you wait for what’s next.

I closed my group coaching business because I knew that season had ended and that something new was ahead, but stepping into the unknown has tested me in ways I didn’t expect.

In a world that glorifies doing, learning to rest, reposition, and trust God’s provision feels counterintuitive—but it’s exactly where He’s leading.

This season isn’t about passivity, and it’s not about effort. It’s about learning a new way of living—one where you are not the source of your own provision. It’s about alignment, timing, and letting God move in ways beyond our own effort.

  • You don’t have to force.

  • You don’t have to strive.

  • You don’t have to panic.

God is good, and that goodness doesn’t waver based on your income or effort. You are not waiting for provision—you are living in it.

Take a deep breath. You’re not failing. You’re being repositioned for what’s next. And when the time comes to move, it won’t feel like striving. It will feel like flow.

Edit: 10min after posting this blog, I checked our bank account and saw that somebody randomly gifted us $500 yesterday. Provision in action! And it still blows me away. God is too good.

Questions for reflection:

1. Where in my life am I still trying to force something that God is asking me to trust Him with?

2. How can I recognize and embrace God’s provision in this season, even if it doesn’t look the way I expected?

3. What old habits of striving do I need to release so I can fully step into alignment and flow with God’s timing?
