“Depart from me, I never knew you.”
Few verses have haunted the hearts of sincere believers more than this one.
Many read it with trembling, wondering, “What if that’s me?”
What if I try my whole life to follow Jesus, only to hear those words in the end?
But that fear reveals something deeper: we’ve been taught to fear being disqualified, when Jesus came to qualify us by grace.
We’ve made “knowing Jesus” about performance—when it was always about relationship.
Religion hears a threat. Love hears an invitation. And the difference is everything.
“Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name… and perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from Me, you evildoers!’” — Matthew 7:22–23
Let’s be clear:
Jesus wasn’t rejecting the humble. He wasn’t dismissing the weak or struggling. He wasn’t turning away the person who longed to follow Him.
He was addressing those who boasted in their works but never walked in relationship.
Those who did things for God without ever being with Him. Their confidence was in their résumé, not in His grace. Their identity was in their spiritual success—not their sonship.
The Greek word for “knew” is ginosko—not head knowledge, but deep, personal, intimate knowing.
This isn’t about productivity.
This is about proximity.
Jesus didn’t say, “You didn’t do enough.”
He said, “You never let Me know you.”
The ones He addresses weren’t clinging to Him—they were citing their spiritual record.
But Heaven doesn’t run on performance metrics. It runs on presence.
Here's the irony:
The person tormented by this verse is usually the one it’s not about. Because fear of being “cast out” doesn’t exist in a heart that’s trying to use God. It only shows up in hearts that already want to please Him.
If you’re afraid that He’ll say “depart from me”… it likely means you already desire to stay close. And that desire isn’t something you manufactured—it’s the Spirit drawing you into love.
You don’t fear losing something you don’t already treasure.
This verse is not a sword over the heads of sincere followers. It’s a mirror for those who would try to earn God’s approval instead of receiving His gift.
Jesus doesn’t reject the struggler—He restores them. He doesn’t shame the weak—He lifts them.
The only ones turned away are those who never wanted Him to begin with—just the benefits.
And even then, His desire was always to know them.
This isn’t about your record. It’s about your relationship.
He’s not tallying your prayers, your hours, your outreach, your devotionals. He’s simply asking, “Are you letting Me know you? Are you walking with Me, not just working for Me?”
You don’t need to impress Jesus. You just need to stay with Him.
He already paid for the right to be with you. He’s not looking to reject you. He’s the One who left Heaven just to have you.
The courtroom is closed. The verdict has been declared: You are His.
The invitation isn’t, “Try harder so He won’t cast you out.” It’s, “Come closer, because He already drew you in.”
And if you ever hear fear whisper, “What if He says He never knew me?” You can answer with confidence: “Oh, but I know Him. And He knows me.”
Fear pushes you to perform. Jesus invites you to abide.
So take a breath. Lay down the striving. And come sit with the One who knows your name—and calls it with joy.
Questions for reflection
1. Am I more focused on doing things for God than being known by Him?
2. What fears or beliefs are keeping me from fully resting in His love and finished work?
3. What does it look like for me today to respond to Jesus’ invitation to deeper intimacy—not out of pressure, but out of love?
Bless you,
Lee
